The epic novel Journey to the West is one of the most celebrated stories of the East. It tells of a seventh century Buddhist monk who goes on a quest for sacred scriptures. And he has three bodyguards: Pigsy—a man-pig who can fly; Sandy—an ogre who turns into a giant fish; and the magical Monkey King—the most powerful of them all, though he also has quite the mischievous streak. This is a humorous and action-packed production for all ages.

The novel, one of the Four Classics of Chinese literature, was written in the sixteenth century during the Ming Dynasty. It provides insight into Buddhism, Taoism, and traditional Chinese beliefs more broadly.

The Characters

The Monkey King
Endowed with magical powers, the smart yet mischevious Monkey King caused chaos in the Heavens before starting anew as the Buddhist monk’s bodyguard.
The Buddhist Monk
The kindhearted, if naïve, leader of our heroes on their journey. A real historical figure who made a dangerous journey in the 7th century in search of Buddhist teachings.
Pigsy
A man-pig who can fly, but is prone to laziness and easily distracted by the ladies, he is the journeymen’s sidekick. Still, when push comes to shove, Pigsy’s loyalty shines.
Sandy
Now a Buddhist, he was once an ogre who terrorized local villages and transformed into a giant fish.
